Fall 2026
Re-Elect Valarie Bachelor & Jennifer Brouhard
Re-electing the current incumbents on Oakland school-board is key to building the movement we need to make universal childcare a reality in Oakland
The Oakland Unified School District serves over 35000 students across over 75 school sites and is well-positioned as the largest East Bay school district to support a universal childcare program through its existing pre-K and Early Childhood offerings, expanded state TK funding and the potential for new funding sources for the District to be implemented in coming years. EBDSA is fighting to expand OUSD's current childcare offerings and to fund full pre-K and Early Childhood in Oakland. To achieve this, we are working to re-elect EBDSA members to the OUSD school board, building coalitions, and planning a ballot measure campaign to expand staff and pay for necessary site improvements.
Re-elect Valarie Bachelor & Jennifer Brouhard to the OUSD school board.
Register & Activate student voters, giving them a voice in the running of their schools.
Establish an SIO program to work with school board officials & to improve communication with members, and support efforts to advance universal policies like childcare and social housing
Build a coalition with OEA, SEIU 1021, Teamsters local 70, AFSCME, UAOS, Black Organizing Project, APEN, AROC, JVP, ACCE and more
Expand OUSD’s pre-K and Early Childhood offerings as far as it’s possible within the limits of OUSD’s current funding.
Establish a plan to fund full pre-K and Early Childhood, including a ballot measure to expand staff and pay for necessary site improvements.
Form & lead a coalition to move this policy forward in the 2028 cycle.

Spring 2027 -
Work with supportive School board members & Apply pressure to expand Pre-K
Simply getting Valarie & Jennifer re-elected isn't enough, we will need to work closely with them over their term to expand pre-K access within OUSD, as well as apply pressure to the entire school board via mass participation in public meetings.
In particular there are a lot of parents & prospective parents both within and outside of DSA that we can work with to apply this pressure
Summer 2027 -
Funding for expansion beyond current available state funding
While there is a currently funding available to OUSD that can be unlocked by transforming existing sites into pre-K hubs, which will also strengthen OUSD's budget by improving enrollment, it's possible that to get to universal childcare we will need additional funding of some sort (Bonds, special taxes, etc).
By the summer we will have a plan to get that funding, so will building the power to get the remaining funds we need so that everyone has access to free childcare.
